Su Trinta 'e Sant'Andria

History

Su Trinta ‘e Sant’Andria is the revival of the traditional moment of tapping new wines dedicated to Saint Andrew, historically held on 30 November.

The traditional appointment was linked to the great oenological vocation of the Ozierese hills and is attested at least since the early 20th century by the historical documentation mentioned below:

  • The archives of the Ozieri Prize show a special mention awarded in the 10th edition of the Prize in 1965 to the poem by Salvatore Chessa, a well-known Barore, ‘A Sant’Andria’ – See extract from the book ‘Poesia in Sardegna 1956-1967’ edited by Antonio Sanna and Tonino Ledda Sarda Fossattaro publisher. The verses have the merit of historicising the event and enhancing the popular sentiment linked to the traditional moment of tapping new wines.
  • The Ozieri Choir first officially published in 1987 the song ‘Su trinta de su mese ‘e Sant’Andria’ set to music by Mario Coloru, with the poem’s text by Barore Chessa.

To commemorate this traditional moment, the municipality and the Pro Loco decided to go beyond the spontaneous initiative of the winegrowers by organising a significant event with a white night in the historic centre, involving winery owners, traders, associations, choirs and cantadores, with the opening of historic buildings and museums.

For several years now, on the last Saturday in November, the wine cellars, organised in a consultancy, have been open in the vast circuit of the historic centre, where guests can taste the new wines accompanied by traditional agro-food products.

The event takes the form of a public event to promote the typical wines and products of Ozieri, the streets and squares of the historic centre with a white night, to enhance its unique architectural features and vocation for social and commercial hospitality and reception.

The event

It is part of the urban marketing programme for revitalising social, historical, cultural and commercial terms of the historic centre of Ozieri.

The municipal administration, together with the Pro Loco, voluntary groups of wine cellar owners, the Centro Commerciale Naturale, shop owners, artisan workshops, and various associations, is organising this promotional event with Notte Bianca. Moreover it’s planning the opening of shops beyond the usual hours, setting up shows, concerts, and initiatives to promote local products and wines as part of the traditional event of ‘Su trinta’e Sant’Andria’, when private wine cellars are opened for the tapping of new wines.

Over the past few years, it has achieved considerable success in terms of participation, standing out in the regional panorama of events for its particularity, with large numbers of visitors from all over the island and even from outside Sardinia. This provided the opportunity to visit the historical buildings, museums, and exhibitions, with consequent significant spin-offs in terms of promoting cultural, agri-food, and economic resources and revitalising the large historic centre of Ozieri.

It does not escape our notice that the success of the event also represents an important resource as a moment of aggregation, among people of different ages and interests, of training and project elaboration in the cultural, social and recreational spheres, but also as an opportunity capable of promoting and fostering the economic development and wine tradition of the area. Su Trinta ‘e Sant’Andria, organised by the municipality, involves numerous cultural and commercial associations, wine growers and operators of typical local products, and has achieved excellent results in terms of turnout, enhancement of wine, food and cultural productions, and promotion of the culture of hospitality and sociability in the historic centre of Ozieri.

On this occasion, crowds of visitors take to the alleyways of the centre, visiting streets, squares, fountains, historical buildings and courtyards and participating with interest in the cultural, archaeological and art exhibitions open at the open museums.

A night of oenological experiences on the typical varieties of the Ozierese hills, with tastings of ancient vines and ‘unicums’ subject to revitalisation and research programmes by regional agencies and universities, such as Alvarega and Redagliadu. But also of gastronomic experiences such as the Ozierese bread ‘la spianata’, historical cheeses such as ‘la greviera’ and the delicate sweets ‘sospiri’ and ‘copuletas’.

Certainly, an opportunity to experience the identity and hospitality of the people of Logudoro, in its cultural and historical aspects, such as the palace of Francesco Ignazio Mannu, the Borgia family and the Grixoni family; the precious retables of the Master of Ozieri; the artefacts that founded the Neolithic civilisation of the Culture of Ozieri.

Giuseppe Garibaldi, Deputy of Ozieri

Giuseppe Garibaldi (Nice 1807 – Caprera 1882) became indissolubly linked to Sardinia in 1856, when he settled on the island of Caprera. But, being a “Sardinian” citizen (that is, of the Kingdom of Sardinia) from birth, there were multiple occasions for relationships with people from Ozieri. Among these were Colonel Clemente Giordano, transferred to Ozieri due to his support for the Roman Republic; the Ozieri painter Salvatore Ghisaura (1823-1889), arrested in Rome for political satire cartoons; Col. Girolamo Grixoni (Battle of Castelvolturno); Capt. Enrico Podestà (Battle of Capua); Ignazio Chessa (Second War of Independence); Francesco Pais Serra, Deputy of Ozieri and Garibaldian colonel (Battle of Bezzecca in 1866 and Mentana in 1867).

Garibaldi became connected to Ozieri by accepting the candidacy for the Chamber of Deputies in the Ozieri constituency, which he represented in Parliament from 1867 to 1870. The results of the 1867 elections are eloquent: Ozieri 348 registered voters, Garibaldi 159 votes – Tempio 209 registered voters, Garibaldi 105 votes – La Maddalena 146 registered voters, Garibaldi 56 votes.

This bond is witnessed by 31 autograph letters from the general, mostly addressed to the Mayor of Ozieri, spanning a time period from 1860 to 1876. In these writings, he suggests initiatives to improve local production techniques, proposes the establishment of vocational courses, and supports the protest against the failure of the railway line to reach the town of Ozieri. Garibaldi defines his constituency as “land of adoption” and “my adoptive homeland,” and in a letter from 1867 writes “to the voters of Ozieri, my second homeland, a heartfelt greeting.”

Ozieri was always grateful to him for the high honor bestowed upon it, and since 1860 honored the hero of two worlds with numerous tokens of esteem: in 1860 honorary citizenship, in 1868 he was awarded the position of Honorary President of the “Society of Mutual Aid and Brotherhood among the workers of Ozieri,” in 1869 the naming of the Masonic Lodge, in 1908 the new Elementary School of Cantaro was named after him, around 1910 the naming of the city’s largest square, in 1961 the erection of a monument in the square named after him, with a bronze bust by the Pavia Risorgimento artist Giò Spertini.
