Assessorato alle attività produttive del comune di Ozieri

Authentic emotions in the heart of Sardinia

Ozieri, perched on hills, with its narrow streets and steep stairways, welcomes visitors, proud of its past. It is well represented by its historical palazzi, embellished with altanas and noble friezes, squares and characteristic views. Those who find themselves enveloped in the urban landscape are impressed by the openings that suddenly present small squares, monumental fountains, churches and ancient convents.

Memory is the true soul of the historical centre, which is distinguished by its characteristics and large size, one of the largest in Sardinia, divided into different quarters known by their particular names: Cuzzolu, Corralzu, Donnigazza, Montiju, Cadeddu , Sa Bicocca and Vignazza.

Artisan workshops, bakeries, bars, shops and market stalls, animate the main squares, from Piazza Garibaldi (S’Ortu ‘e Su Conte) via the elegant street leading to Cantareddu, where the streets of Sa Ena, the road leading to the beautiful Fonte Grixoni, and Badde, known for the frequentation of sos zilleris. In these small bars, the white wine of the Ozieri hills is poured in abundance.

The historic centre recalls the glorious past with the noble families of Spanish origin who gave way to the rich bourgeoisie of landowners ‘Sos prinzipales’. Merchants and artisans grew around this presence, and the strong link with the church was strengthened over time. The Episcopal Curia and the seminary represented a garrison that positively marked the social and cultural growth of the territory, with the expression of high prelates, cultured intellectuals, scholars, poets and artists.

Culture, language and poetry remain the founding elements of Ozieri’s identity heritage. The great poets of the past are celebrated in the Ozieri Prize for Sardinian Literature, a system that has collected the most relevant literary production in the Sardinian language. Also in music with a precious variant of polyvocal singing and with the cantadores a chiterra engaged in the annual ‘Usignolo della Sardegna’ (Nightingale of Sardinia) competition, a prize dedicated to the most virtuoso voices in this difficult form of Sardinian singing.

The backbone of the local economy is based on the great livestock heritage that, in the past, as today, has made the vast Ozieri plain one of the richest production basins in Sardinia. In the past, cattle breeding represented such a resource that border agreements were required to favour exports to the markets of Marseilles and Ajaccio.

Horse breeding was of the highest quality, for which the Regio Deposito degli Stalloni (Royal Depot of Stallions) was set up in 1861 to encourage the improvement of the breed, with the subsequent inauguration in 1921 of the Chilivani Hippodrome. The establishment of the Equestrian Augmentation Institute, thus represented the fulcrum of the birth and development of the Anglo-Arab-Sardinian horse.

With the advent of sheep breeding, linked to the industrial production of Pecorino Romano cheese, herds of over 100,000 animals were concentrated in the Ozieri plain (the municipality with the largest number of sheep in Europe and the highest production of sheep’s milk) and the consequent emergence of industrial milk processing facilities in the area.

Since the 18th century, livestock has been the protagonist of livestock fairs, which used to be held in the city centre and currently take place in the San Nicola fairgrounds. Every year, the Livestock and Agri-food Fair held in April attracts thousands of breeders and visitors, representing the most important event for the sector in Sardinia.
